Watford FC now accepts BTC for payment of merchandise

English Premier League side, Watford Football Club has announced it now accepts Bitcoin as payment for its merchandise.

The Bitcoin symbol will also be displayed on the sleeve of the team jersey.

The club made the announcement on its website on Thursday, stating that Bitcoin’s famous ‘B’ logo will be featured on the player’s uniforms as a result of the club’s partnership with Bitcoin betting platform Sportsbet.io, says Coin Telegraph.

In addition, the football club will accept the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation as payment for merchandise.

According to the club’s official post, the addition of the Bitcoin logo to the kit is part of an extensive campaign aiming to “improve awareness around Bitcoin and educate the public on the benefits of using cryptocurrencies.”

Head of marketing of the team’s principal shirt sponsor, Sportsbet.io Justin Le Brocque said the firm is giving back to the crypto community: “The crypto community have been hugely supportive of us since we began, so putting the Bitcoin logo on the sleeve felt like a fun way to give something back while also showing them our support.”

According to the Coin Telegraph report, the sponsorship will be crowdfunded, and anyone can access a public LED space displayed during live games, as well as exclusive Watford Football Club merchandise, by bidding Bitcoin.

Le Brocque went on to say that he hopes the Bitcoin initiative “will create even more buzz around cryptocurrencies.”

Sports are becoming increasingly popular for bringing blockchain and cryptocurrency to a wide audience.

As reported by Coin Telegraph back in August, the Dallas Mavericks are the second NBA team to accept Bitcoin as payment for merchandise and match tickets.

The Sacramento Kings were the first NBA team to accept Bitcoin for promotional products and tickets five years ago.
