Turkey Strategy 2023 shows blockchain infrastructure plans

19 Sep 2019

Turkey’s public administration will be facilitated with the government’s latest plans to implement a national blockchain infrastructure to use disturbed ledger technology (DLT).  This was announced as part of the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s Strategy 2023 presentation.

Blockchain and DLT are set to be priorities in Strategy 2023, which explains how blockchain has become one of the most popular and fast-growing technological trends. A Startup Genome survey highlighted that worldwide start-up funding rose by 101.5%.

Strategy 2023 also marked the first time that a Turkish ministry-level document mentioned Bitcoin as a reference. In the report, it says ‘Blockchain, which became popular with virtual currencies like Bitcoin, delivers a distributed communication infrastructure to provide trust between parties on transactions without the need for a central authority. This feature enables many different use cases that address transparency and reliability issues, from smart contracts to supply chains. Because it removes any intermediaries, blockchain technology builds new business models that will shape the future.’

The plan also entails working with Turkish regulators to help in making a regulatory sandbox for blockchain applications. This announcement followed several blockchain technology implementation, such as the Istanbul Blockchain and Innovation Center, known as BlockchainIST Center, which was inaugurated at Bahçeşehir University. It was described as ‘the most important center of research and development and innovation in Turkey in which scientific studies and publications are made in blockchain technologies.’
