Problems with El Salvador’s BTC wallet ‘Chivo’ now “95% fixed”

A week after Bitcoin became legal tender in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele has stated the rollout of the Bitcoin wallet was too much of a challenge.
The official state Bitcoin wallet, known as Chivo, has disabled new registrations temporarily and stopped downloads of the app for new smartphone models as a result of ongoing issues, according to President Bukele.
“Both things will be enabled until the application has no errors,” the President said, going on to add that downloads and registrations should resume within the coming days.
“The technical errors of the Chivo wallet have been 95% fixed. In the next few days it will be working at 100%,” Bukele said on Twitter. He added that the 200 Bitcoin ATMs in El Salvador continue to “work perfectly,” along with the 50 Chivo-supported ATMs in the U.S.
Bukele continued that the problematic Chivo rollout was due to a premature launch: “Launching everything in three months was too much of a challenge and we made mistakes, but we are already fixing them and hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans can already use Chivo with no issues.”
The President added that the Chivo wallet has accumulated half a million users since the app was launched last Tuesday.
El Salvador introduced the Bitcoin wallet in collaboration with Mexican cryptocurrency exchange Bitso, saying it was the “core crypto service provider” for Chivo.
Despite efforts to rectify the issues with Chivo, a number of users have continued to experience problems making transactions and withdrawals, adding the app’s functionality was “almost zero.”
